Abra Weavers Face Death Group C at 2026-27 EASL

The East Asia Super League EASL announced its 2026-27 group stage schedule, and Abra Weavers — MPBL Philippines champions — landed in a challenging Group C featuring Ryukyu Golden Kings and Taoyuan Pauian Pilots. This is considered one of the toughest groups in EASL history, raising serious questions about the Philippine team's chances of advancing deep into the tournament. Group C comprises four teams: Ryukyu Golden Kings (Japan), Taoyuan Pauian Pilots (Taiwan), Abra Weavers (Philippines), and Hong Kong Eastern. Both Ryukyu and Taoyuan are familiar names to the EASL semifinals from last season. Ryukyu won the Japanese B.League championship, while Taoyuan were back-to-back runners-up in the Taiwanese league. Meralco was eliminated in the group stage after a string of losses, including an 88-79 defeat to Ryukyu that exposed the technical gap when facing Japanese basketball. If Abra Weavers have comparable quality, they will face equally difficult challenges at EASL. Hong Kong Eastern is considered Abra Weavers most winnable match in Group C. The season opener against Eastern at SM Seaside Arena in Cebu on October 3rd will be the first crucial test. A victory in this game could build positive momentum for the Philippine squad before a long and challenging road ahead. EASL's fourth season switches to a home-and-away round-robin format, expanding geographically across Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Philippines, Hong Kong, Macau, and Mongolia.
